The Artist Spotlight serves to highlight the work of selected Juried Sales Gallery artists individually throughout the year. Each artist creates new work for display, and is featured in a “Meet the Artist” Reception. The project challenges artists to explore new methods and/or subject matter, increases the artists' profile, and raises community awareness of the chosen media. |

April-May 2008

Andrew Chulyk, Sculpture
Reception Friday, April 11, 6-8 p.m. Free to the public.
Andrew’s Artist Spotlight exhibit will feature sculptures (see photo, left) made with miscellaneous industrial materials, antique machine parts and discarded objects. These objects, infused with a dark humor, are idiosyncratic commentaries on daily lifethat are both alien and familiar. These sculptures will reveal a new side to Andrew’s artist personality--currently in the Juried Sales Gallery, we find Andrew’s wooden sculptural boxes, appearing like miniature temples or sacred vessels.

August-September 2008

Bernadette Mahfood, Glass/Jewelry
Reception Friday, Aug. 15, 6-8 p.m. Free to the public.
Bringing the precision of a mathematician and the flair of a poet to her work, Bernadette Mahfood began making glass beads in 1987. Today, she is recognized as a pioneer in the American glass beadmaking movement. She draws on techniques ancient and modern to create flameworked and kiln-formed beads. Bernadette says, "My jewelry reflects my passion for combining colors and textures. I think, 'If it doesn't have color, why wear it?'

October-November 2008

Paul Brokken, Oil Painting
Reception Friday, Oct. 3, 6-8 p.m. Free to the public.
In describing his work, Paul Brokken says, "Carl Jung said that the great artist has a permeability of the partition separating the conscious and the unconscious. It is this permeability that I utilize when creating a work and living my life. I try to capture the form of my unconscious. My work is the result of a constant dialogue within this hauntingly beautiful place."
